Our Mission

Hi everyone! I'm Tom.

My mission is to provide access to high-quality storytelling and communication skills training for technical minds, at scale.

I created SFT to help technically-minded people like you get your ideas across clearly and powerfully to non-specialists: your clients, non-technical colleagues, the press, the general public, VCs... or anyone, really, who doesn't fully understand what you do.

SFT will help you communicate your expertise to bigger audiences.

The problem

Maybe you struggle to get your ideas and expertise the attention they deserve because:

•You're used to talking to other experts in your field

•Your field is conceptually difficult or complex

•Your training hasn't included or emphasised communication skills

•You don't want to feel you're oversimplifying things

•You believe you aren't creative

•You lack confidence in presenting yourself

•You  believe that to appear smart, you have to make things look complex (this is forgivable, but see here for why you shouldn't do that!)

What you'll learn

With SFT, you'll learn how to:

•Explain your ideas to anyone
•Expand your global influence
•Create and communicate change
•Achieve your career potential
•Raise investment

through the art and science of storytelling, as this is the most powerful way to grab an audience's attention, create a memorable presentation of your skills, experience, and ideas, and inspire others to act.

We have blog posts, videos, guides, live trainings and online courses.

How SFT is different

There are millions of resources out there on communication skills and storytelling.

But SFT is specifically aimed at technically minded people: programmers, engineers, scientists, analysts, financiers, and so on. I offer a combination of creative, teaching and industry experience that (to my knowledge) nobody else has.

I don't believe in teaching you a "box of tricks". You can find that somewhere else. Everyone's different, and it's very obvious when someone is presenting an idea using someone else's techniques.

Like getting your black belt

I will teach you the principles you need to develop your own style. It's like getting your black belt.

And it's not just about storytelling: SFT will provide you with invaluable guidance on other soft skills you need to develop, as well as industry-relevant insights.

The resources you find here will help you bridge the gap between the world you work in and the outside world.

You'll develop superpowers of communication.

I'm uniquely positioned to help you with this because I have a technical as well as a creative background, and proven track record in helping technical businesses.

I studied philosophy at university, with a heavy emphasis on mathematics and mathematical logic.

I worked full-time in education for nearly 7 years, including 4 with The British Council, where I gained a postgraduate teaching diploma, before I went freelance to  build a creative content business in the tech industry.

Over the last 15 years, I've worked with technical businesses worldwide, ranging from early stage startups to financial institutions, helping them tell their stories in every imaginable format from video, to animation, to infographics, to public speaking. I've also worked for brands such as Adidas, and directed music videos.

A few years ago I launched Financial Films as an industry-focused content production house.

I've also spoken on stages internationally and done a TEDx talk. You can find a list of my speaking engagements here.

So I think it's fair to say I've earned my black belt.

Now let me help you earn yours.

What's on offer

Many of the resources on SFT will be completely free.

You can also book me for a talk or workshop at your organisation.
In the near future, there will also be professional online courses available to buy on specific topics.

If you'd like to work with me personally, for example, by running training or giving a talk to your organisation, please get in touch for a free, zero-obligation consultation.

What people say

Testimonials from around the world

Francois Rivard, CEO of Innocap

“A raving fan”

I work with Tom personally and used his services for 20 people in our group (lawyers, portfolio managers, sales people, compliance and operations experts). He was accretive across the board: took time to understand our business (which is complex and niche), clients, realities and issues. He crafted a custom program to ensure we got the best value for time spent together. He worked under pressure and very tight timelines on sensitive information and his contribution was palpable.  I am a raving fan of Tom and his methods and would use him again anytime.

“The best of the best”

Being trained by Tom Hayton on presentation skills and storytelling is like having guitar lessons by Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton: you’re trained by the best of the best!  I had some apprehensions before starting our sessions because it was going to be online…  and then, because Tom is so engaging, it didn’t even take 5 minutes at the beginning of the first session to feel like he was with me, in my home office!
In addition to being an expert teacher, Tom has a lot of humor, which made every minute spent in his trainings a lot of fun!

“Great feedback”

Tom Hayton is one of the greatest mentors of Gaza Sky Geeks.  During our Hackathon, he mentored many teams and delivered workshops. He got great feedback, not only from participants but from other mentors as well. In April 2020, he mentored over 8 startups during the biggest virtual hackathon in Palestine: Hack The Crisis Palestine and was always available to help others day or night! He also took part in two round table discussions organized by GSG about resilience. I'm always impressed with Tom's willingness to support others in need. We're really proud that he's part of the GSG mentors' network.

“Engaging and interactive”

I’ve participated in one of Tom’s workshops focused on storytelling for technology professionals and I really liked it. It was very engaging and interactive with the perfect mix between theory and practical exercises. It’s been a while since I took the training, but I still go back to Tom’s slides for inspiration whenever I have to prepare a presentation.

“We got funded!”

We met Tom when we were preparing our pitch for a public funding. Besides providing us super valuable resources, Tom supported us in setting up the storyline of the pitch and making sure our pitch is easy to understand. And it helped: we got funded! If you're looking for someone to help you clearly communicate your story, Tom is your go-to person.

“Our startups were more relaxed and confident on their big day”

Tom did an excellent job at preparing 10 science startups for their DemoDay during our accelerator program, AdMaCom. His patience, support and the very organised structure of his training paid off - our startups were more confident and relaxed on their big day and their presentations were much clearer.
